Tsunami Orphanages

Several hunderds of children have been orphaned by the deadly tsunamis that struck our shores on 26 December 2004.

We are presently planning to build four new orphanages in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Badulla with assistance from City Harvest Church of Singapore. These would be fashioned after the Canaan Children's Home in Vaddukkodai, Jaffna. They would be called the Canaan Harvest Children's Homes. Work has already begun in Badulla.

Ground breaking at Badulla. Ground breaking at Badulla. Ground breaking at Badulla.

Why Badulla, since it is not one of the affected areas?

This centre will mainly be for children who have been traumatized by the sea as a result of the tsunamis. Relocating inland would put them at ease and help them to lead a more normal life.

How many children will each orphanage accomodate?

We are targetting 100 in each.

How much will they cost to build?

It depends on each location, but approximately US$30,000 (thirty thousand) each.

How many staff will each orphanage have?

5 full time staff plus other volunteers.

How much will it cost to support each orphanage per month and what would this cover?

The cost per child is around $60. This includes food, clothing, education, medical, etc. Each staff would also cost $60. Therefore at 30 children and 5 staff the cost would be around US$2100 per month. With 100 children the cost would be over US$6000 per month.
